“Path of the Wolf”
by Tony-Paul de Vissage, 2025
The latest horror story from Tony-Paul de Vissage gets off to an engrossing start, with a neglected wife meeting what she initially thinks is a dog or wolf. Surprise, surprise, it’s not.
The lovely Isabeau finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage to François, an artist of some means. While François searches for a model for his painting of a moribund saint, he discovers a Gypsy camp and their pet wolf—who is, in fact, a man raised as if he was a wolf.
François brings the wolf-man home and give him to Isabeau to care for. Realizing the wolf-man is simply a guy who has been kept imprisoned and forced into sexual practices, Isabeau shows pity and tries to civilize the young man.
When her husband returns, he again treats Giovanni like a beast, hoping he’ll revert to the gaunt figure he needs for his painting. The wolf-man finds himself in a tug of war between the feuding couple.
The story picks up when a decadent nobleman asks François to paint an erotic portrait with Giovanni as the model.
A pivotal and dramatic scene occurs near the climax when Isabeau prepares to give herself to Giovanni... just as the light of the full moon enters the room.
Worth a look.
4 stars.
